Community Gastroenterology Service: Frequently Answered Questions

28/6/2010

Q1 Are the Westbury on Trym GPs running the service?

A No, they are hosting the service. Dr Mike Cohen and his GP colleague Dr Richard Spence who is a GP in Bishopston have been doing endoscopy at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals for many years. Dr John Entrican is a GP in Yate South Gloucestershire. He has considerable experience in gastroenterology.
They have teamed up with Prime Diagnostics Ltd who is the leading UK organisation in delivering endoscopy services in the community

Q2 How will I be referred to the service?

A Your GP can refer you to the service .
Referral will be made by the choose and book service which is used for all onward referrals

Q3 How will this service differ from the hospital service?

A It will be identical but it will be in a general practice setting. You will be offered the choice to have the procedure with or without sedation. We shall be using the most modern and state of the art equipment. But we shall be offering gastroscopy using very small endoscopes which can be passed through the nose. This is much more comfortable and acceptable for patients. For the bowel, flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy will be similar to the procedure in hospital, but we will using carbon dioxide rather than air to distend the bowel which will increase patient comfort considerably.

Q4 If something abnormal is found how will I be treated?

A The GP endoscopist will be able to offer advice about treatment to your GP in the same way that hospital doctors currently do. Should more complex treatment or investigations be deemed necessary your GP will be advised as to how to refer onward.
In the case of very serious disease being found (such as cancer) you will be directly be referred to hospital as a matter of urgency
