Practice history

The practice was founded in the 1930s in a large doctor's house on Falcondale Road. The practice gradually expanded and moved to 60 Falcondale Road in 1976 and, with further growth, moved to the present location at the rear of the public car park in the centre of Westbury on Trym, in 2008.  We are a longstanding GP training practice.

Practice area and population

We currently have nearly 12,000 regular patients and are growing. The practice serves a patient population with a varied range of ages and backgrounds.  There are many elderly people's homes and nursing homes, and 20% of the patient population is over 65 years old (Avon average is 15%). The housing is mainly 1930s with smaller areas of Victorian and council housing.

We are members of GP Care Ltd.  In May 2006 we were awarded the prestigious Quality Practice Award by the Royal College of General Practitioners. We are an accredited training practice for the university of Bristol, where we have a programme of medical students placed with us during the year. We are an RCGP accredited research practice.

Education and Training

Our Building and Facilities

We have a modern purpose built health centre that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The building was finished in 2008 and has 22 clinical rooms on the ground floor and spacious offices and meeting areas on the first and second floors. The building is a big part of who we are and we aim to provide a welcoming, professional and pleasant environment when you visit us.
All our rooms are modern and include computer links and up to date medical equipment. We have recently been able to purchase some new equipment and computer packages to help us gather and see patient results more quickly and send documents to each other electronically. This provides improved response time and greater degree of confidentiality and flexibility.

We have a hardworking cleaning team who thoroughly clean our building daily and we have a handyman who visits us weekly to help with maintenance. If you have any comments or suggestions about the building please let us know.

Access

IT

The practice is “paperlight” and all doctors and nurses consult using this computer record. We have a practice Intranet. Our practice is one of the highest users of the new electronic prescription service- this aims to reduce paper consumption as well as reducing lost scripts by enabling them to be tracked all the way to the chemist. You may be asked which chemist you would like to nominate.
